Mr. James Gregory is one of our special residents at Ridgeview Health Services. It was brought to the attention of our Second Wind Dreams® coordinator, click Sarah Christen, that Mr. Gregory dreamed of being able to go visit his wife’s grave. When he was living on his own, Mr. Gregory would visit her graveside very often to place bouquets of flowers on her tombstone. And so, a dream was born. Sarah Christen set about getting all of the details in place. She contacted the local Jasper florist, Leaf and Petal, owned by Anna Banks Daniel. They graciously donated the flowers for the tombstones. (As Sarah Christen learned later, Mr. Gregory had 2 deceased wives he loved and missed dearly)
On July 29, 2013, the staff set about getting Mr. Gregory dressed and ready for his day. They wanted to keep the special trip a surprise. They came up with some excuse to get him up and out of his room. At 9:30 on the dot, Sarah Christen and Rachel Thompson drove up to the front of Ridgeview Health Services in the van. They walked into the lobby where Mr. Gregory sat and proceeded to tell him that today was a special day for him. They planned to take him to both cemeteries and let him place flowers on the graves. After that, they planned to take him to eat at one of his favorite spots – Gabby’s. He was so excited.
The trips to the graveside were sweet. Mr. Gregory remarked several times how much it meant to be able to visit them once again. His daughter, Peggy, joined up with the group at the first cemetery and spent the day on the excursion as well.
After that, all were famished and ready to eat some good food. When Mr. Gregory came in, several of his friends were there eating as well! He was able to talk with them all. Everyone was glad to see him there. The waitresses recognized Mr. Gregory as one of their old regulars. In fact, a few even said, “We don’t need to bring him a menu! We know what he’ll want. 3 eggs over-light, sausage, a biscuit, and gravy.” And they were right! Mr. Gregory happily ate his favorite meal.
He was even surprised by getting to see his great-granddaughter. She didn’t know he was going to be there and just happened to walk in to eat. She hugged his neck and even took a few minutes to take a picture with him.
What a precious day. This is what makes Second Wind Dreams® a special organization to be a part of. If you know a resident at Ridgeview that needs a dream fulfilled, contact Sarah Christen Ivey. She would love to help see a dream fulfilled. And be sure to share this story and like our Facebook page so you can continue to hear more stories like it.
